Baptism

Infant Baptism at the Church of the Resurrection

The Meaning of Baptism

Through Baptism, God enables us to share in His divine life in Jesus Christ and adopts us as His children. In this sacrament, we receive the Holy Spirit and become members of the People of God, the Body of Christ, which is the Church.

Baptism purifies us from sin and marks the beginning of our lifelong journey of faith, calling us to grow in spiritual maturity.

As the first of the three Sacraments of Christian Initiation—together with Confirmation and the Eucharist—Baptism is rooted in faith in the Risen Christ and is offered to all people as a gift of salvation.

For infants, Baptism is celebrated in the faith of their parents, godparents, and the Church.

Basic Guidelines and Information

(According to the Code of Canon Law cc. 867–868, 872–874; Catechism of the Catholic Church 1251, 1255)

  • Parents are responsible for presenting their child for Baptism as soon after birth as possible. Except in cases of necessity, Baptism is to be celebrated in the church.

  • At least one parent (or legal guardian) must give consent, and there must be a reasonable hope that the child will be raised in the Catholic Faith.

Godparent Requirements

  • A child may have one or two godparents. If there are two, they must be one male and one female.

To be eligible as a godparent, a person must:

  • Be chosen by the parents and have the intention and ability to fulfill this role.

  • Be at least 16 years old.

  • Be a confirmed Roman Catholic who has received the Eucharist.

  • Be living in harmony with the Catholic Faith, if married, must be married in the Catholic Church

  • Be a good role model for the child being baptized.

A baptized person from another Christian community may serve only as a Christian witness, alongside a Catholic godparent. A non-baptized person may not serve as a godparent or witness.
